Rental apartment in colourful Pikku Huopalahti

Just a tram ride from the city

In Pikku Huopalahti, or "Pikkis" as the locals call it, you can enjoy life by the sea, engage in activities at the village house, or take a break from daily routines with the power of community theatre. The colourful architecture and unique rental apartments of this suburb with a city feel will impress and inspire you to explore.

Located in West Helsinki, the best features of Pikku Huopalahti are the urban landscape and convenient location, along with proximity to nature. There's plenty to do by the sea, and from close-by Keskuspuisto you can even ski all the way to Nurmijärvi.

Nestled between Mannerheimintie and Paciuksenkatu, this colorful district is a vibrant counterpoint to the concrete buildings of the 1970s and home to about ten thousand city dwellers. The proximity to major roads ensures excellent transport links, and you can reach both sides of Pikku Huopalahti by tram.

Let’s get to know Pikku Huopalahti a bit better!

Pick a maritime activity of your liking

Charming Pikku Huopalahti is located along the bay of the same name. The bay is fed by the Haaga stream, restored in 2023 for the movement of fish. Here you can spot spawning trout or three-spined sticklebacks. The restoration of the stream was a true ecological deed, as the fish are extremely endangered. Therefore, you should not touch them or their spawning, but just admire them from a distance.

You can take a walk around Pikku Huopalahti starting from the seaside walking paths while enjoying the "Flower of Life" art park in Tilkanniitty Park, designed by artist Sanna Karlsson-Sutisna. If you're up for a longer brisk walk, it's just a couple of kilometers to the Keskuspuisto and Seurasaari outdoor areas.

The Pikku Huopalahti beach has a cozy playground with equipment and a sunbathing area with loungers, and perhaps a birdwatching tower in the future.

Additionally, the seaside offers excellent opportunities for fishing, paddleboarding, and canoeing. There is even a local boat club in Pikku Huopalahti.

Village house connects

Pikku Huopalahti's very own village house is actually the old Tapanila station building, moved to its current location at Tilkantori in 1993. The house is rented out for private events, meetings, and art exhibitions, with the condition that events must be religiously and politically neutral. It hosts various groups such as the chess club, painting club, meditation group, and a meeting group for immigrants.

There are plenty of associations in Pikku Huopalahti offering enjoyable activities for all local residents, in the community house or elsewhere. Interested in sports with or without your child in the PIHAUS club, allotment gardening Tilkka style, or maybe playing bridge?

The residents' association, Pikku Huopalahti seura, also organizes annual village festivals with lots of fun activities, especially for the youngest family members and those young at heart (a balloon magician mentioned!).

Spot the landmark terrace house

Pikku Huopalahti forms an architecturally diverse and unique ensemble with its colorful facades. This ensemble is crowned by the terrace house, often called Helsinki's most unusual building.

Designed by architect Reijo Jallinoja and completed in 1994, the building's unique step-like shape means that almost all apartments have large terraces. It rises at the corner of Mannerheimintie and Korppaanmäentie, forming a clear landmark for the entire district.

Restaurant Feltbay has a fun pun in its name from Huopalahti, actually derived from the Swedish name Hoplaks, meaning aspen bay (laksi = older form of the word bay in Finnish). However, the aspens of Pikku Huopalahti were cut down in the 1980s when building the new district.

Tilkanniitty is fun for the whole family

SATO has large, family-friendly rental apartments in Pikku Huopalahti. Nestled in the shade of small water bodies and the Toimela allotment gardens, the playground Viiri is in demand, quickly becoming the favorite hangout spot for the whole family.

The park's mission is to offer a safe and enjoyable leisure space for baby and child families as well as young people, and it can be rented for family events. A brand new skate park will be built on the Tilkanniitty field by the end of 2024.

Break from everyday life in the community theatre

In the Pikku Huopalahti community theatre, locals who work in various fields during the day practice scriptwriting and acting under a director's guidance. Acting effectively distracts from daily routines.

The season starts in autumn with improvisation exercises, which form the basis for the spring play. The requirement is an open mind and commitment to practice. Anyone can learn to act if they want to!

Pikku Huopalahti indeed offers activities for all ages. Could this be your future neighborhood?
