What is employee accommodation?
An employee accommodation is a voluntary in-kind benefit provided by an employer, where an employee receives an apartment owned or rented by the employer based on their employment.
If the employer offers the housing benefit as a non-monetary benefit, the employee pays tax on the value of the housing benefit, which is added to the normally paid salary. The Finnish tax administration makes an annual decision on the amounts to be followed in taxation for in-kind benefits. If, however, the employee pays market-rate rent for the apartment, usually no housing benefit is formed, even if the apartment is rented from a third party.
