Having trouble paying rent?
Take action early
Struggling with payments can happen to anyone, especially during life changes. Don’t face the situation alone – the sooner you act, the easier it is to find a solution.
If your rent is late, our payment partner Ropo Oy will first send you a reminder via SMS and later a payment reminder for the overdue amount. If the payment is not made despite the reminders, Ropo may file a summons application with the district court.
It is important to avoid the matter proceeding to court, as it will lead to significant additional costs. It can also lead to losing your home and result in a payment default entry in your credit history.
The sooner you take action, the easier it is to find a solution. Here’s what you can do:
1. Check your payment status in MyRopo
You can check your rent payment status anytime in MyRopo. If your payment issue is temporary and you will soon be able to catch up on your rent, postponing the due date in MyRopo may help ease your situation.
2. Find out if you are eligible for benefits
Check whether you are eligible for housing benefit or social assistance. You can get advice and information from Kela or your local social services. You might also consider asking a friend or family member if they could temporarily assist with your rent payments.
3. Pay what you can
Even if you cannot pay the full amount at once, making a partial payment can help manage the situation and prevent the case from proceeding to court. Keeping rent arrears from growing too large makes it easier to recover and prevents the debt from becoming overwhelming.
4. Prioritise rent and other housing costs
If your funds are limited, always pay your rent and essential housing-related expenses, such as electricity bills, first. This way, your housing is secured, and it's easier to focus on resolving the financial challenges.
5. Make use of free counselling services
If managing your finances feels challenging, professional advice is available – even completely free of charge. For example, Guarantee Foundation's Debt Helpline (tel. 0800 9 8009) and the Ask About Money web chat provide anonymous, confidential, and free financial counselling.
6. Contact us for support
If you have concerns about payments or overdue bills, please reach out first to Ropo’s payment advisory service. You can get personal assistance via MyRopo’s chat or by calling 09 4246 1304.
